LaLa Spotlight: Kerry McGauley

It’s always so refreshing to meet young people with big dreams, especially when their smiles are just as big. That’s why we’re so inspired by our dear friend, Kerry McGauley. This St. Louis native is a midwest girl with a big city mentality, and a flare for fashion. Majoring in Apparel Design and Technology, Kerry has dreams of one day designing her own clothing line and by the looks of what she’s already accomplished (check out her website here), we’re putting our names on the waiting list. Two flower crowns for us please! We sat down with Kerry and learned a little bit more about her dreams and aspirations and hope that her drive will inspire you to also do what you love. Here’s what she had to say!

(Kerry in one of her own designs)

How long have you been designing and making clothing?
I started making clothes with the help of my mom at age 12. My mom had always sewn matching outfits for my sisters and I growing up which sparked my interest in fashion at a young age.

As a designer, what inspires you?
I am constantly being inspired by everything around me, whether it’s a photograph I took while traveling, a unique piece of jewelry, or the colors of leaves during the change of season. I also love wandering the aisles of fabric stores and seeing what hues, textures, or prints will catch my eye.Where do you see yourself in ten years and even beyond?
In 10 years I would love to be working as a designer in New York City. I’d like to design for other fashion design companies or style at a magazine in their fashion department, but my ultimate dream is to have my own clothing line. What has been your favorite fashion experience so far in your life?
This past summer I interned with Alice+Olivia in their design department and worked very closely with their bead-wear designer. I assisted her on a number of projects, but the highlight was creating a hand-beaded overlay that will be sewn onto a gown for their first ever gown collection. As an intern, it was thrilling to be given this responsibility and trusted to make design decisions on my own. What’s your go to outfit?
For everyday, I stick with my favorite dark wash jeans, cuffed at the hem, with a neutral blouse and suede ankle booties. I’ll top it off with my favorite wine colored infinity scarf and a gold cocktail ring.

What three staple items should every woman/fashionista own?
A well-fitted pair of straight, dark wash jeans, a tailored blazer, and (not to sound cliche) a perfect little black dress that flatters your figure. Who’s your style icon?
I’m a huge fan of Olivia Palermo. I love how she experiments with current trends but always looks classy and sophisticated.

Arm party or statement necklace?
I love both, just not at the same time! Arm party when looking to add some color and a statement necklace to jazz up a boring neckline. Favorite blogs or websites?
I’m addicted to street style blogs, primarily the Sartorialist and the Street Chic section on Elle.com. I also love Style.com to get the latest news on the fashion industry and see images from all the shows during Fashion Week.

Best fashion advice you’ve ever been given?
Wear what makes you comfortable and confident.

Meet the PSG Candidates Joe and Lexi

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down at our favorite spot on campus (you guessed it, Greyhouse) and chatting with two of Purdue’s best and brightest leaders, Joe Rust and Lexi Hiland. The duo are running for Purdue Student Government President and Vice President, and although the two seem as different as day and night, their partnership is one that will take them places. This fact was apparent from the way they completed each other’s sentences, to way they spoke so highly about each other, to the way they joked about all the funny anecdotes they’ll have to tell their grandchildren (mutual or not) about their campaigning experiences. But don’t take our word for it… read it and believe it.

Introduce yourselves:

Joe: I’m Joe Rust, a sophomore from Seymour, Indiana, studying agriculture. I’m the youngest of thirteen kids and I’m running for student body President.

Lexi: And I’m Lexi Hiland, a junior from Carmel, Indiana in film studies. I’m an only child and I’m running for student body Vice President alongside Joe.

What made you decide to run for student body President and Vice President?

Joe: It was on a bus ride coming back from Kansas City with a bunch of agriculture students at Purdue that another ag senator and I decided to walk around and talk to the other students on the bus about issues on campus. We spent three hours going seat to seat just talking one on one with them and I had so much fun. I remember getting off the bus and thinking about how much I enjoyed those three hours and then thinking that becoming Purdue Student Government President was the perfect way to continue that; talking to leaders on campus and getting their thoughts about issues at Purdue.

I then started looking for a running mate who would be a good fit, someone who wouldn’t think of the same ideas as me, but would compliment me and cover my weaknesses. I got a list of names from some friends and Lexi was on the list so we met up for lunch and I told her I’d talk to her about it more after winter break.

Lexi: So I’m unloading my stuff at Theta after winter break and Joe walks in with a sorority sister of mine, Erin Whittaker, and with his roommate. He walks right up to me, gets down on one knee, and says, “Lexi will you be my running mate.” He then pulls out a Purdue pin and says, “take this in honor of your love for Purdue”… and the rest is history. And somewhere in there I said, “I will” or “maybe” or “if I have to” [laughing]. I can’t remember.

What is your vision for the future of Purdue?

Joe: I want to see Purdue coming together. Different races, students from different countries, majors, and religions. There’s just a lot of diversity on campus and there are so many opportunities to work together to learn about other people and other cultures and we aren’t taking advantage of that. We could create such a strong network. We’re all going to go out one day to change the world in different ways and in different places. Creating that network here while we’re still students will keep us connected in the future as Boilermakers always.

Lexi: I really want to make it a goal that students are aware of what’s available to them through the university. We want to create videos for students, go out and talk to them, making sure that they know they can be involved with things using their unique interests. We want to make students know, especially the younger students, that they can use their unique skills on campus. We want them to know what resources are available to them, and not just with legal services or academics. We want to let them know they can be involved and make their experience at Purdue an even bigger tradition.

I’m a film major so initially I guess you wouldn’t think there was something I could have a leadership position in except pertaining to film. But seeing that I can use those skills within an organization, like Old Masters, to make the call out video and other things, and even getting an internship from that leadership position, it really shows that anyone can get involved and what great opportunities it can lead to.

Lexi, tell us something great about your running mate Joe.

What do I chose?! Joe has impressed me in so many ways. The top two I can think of are his genuine care for other students and finding out what they need to make their experience better at Purdue. He’s open to talking to anyone and he wants to know what they’re doing and wants to be a part of it. His confidence is so appealing.

Also, his knowledge about the university, all the ins and outs of Purdue, is so apparent and incredible. He knows faculty members, knows the system, and cares about how it works. He wants to be a part of something that is incredibly special to him and others, and the way he communicates that with university members he knows is honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. It’s very professional yet at the same time personal.

Joe, it’s your turn. Tell us something great about Lexi.

Since day one Lexi has surprised me. She has not stopped impressing me. She keeps me in check and makes sure we’re going in the right direction for the right reasons. I’ve been in awe of how she catches me on my slips. I’m really lucky to have someone like her who can do that. She’s so creative. She has a passion for the things she loves, you can see how important film, music, and photography are to her. She sees things that I don’t. I love that. She brings a fresh perspective and that’s something that will be great in Purdue Student Government and the more and more time we spend together I am so confident she would make a great Vice President.

Why should people vote for you?

Joe: Campaigning is like a giant brainstorming session. It’s all about the leaders of Purdue thinking of the best ways to improve the school. So the ideas are out there. But it’s not about who can come up with the best ideas, it’s who can make them happen. We can make those ideas a reality. Not only can we implement those ideas, the whole idea of our campaign is ONE Purdue. It’s about removing the barrier between Purdue Student Government and the students, and making sure the flow of ideas are constantly coming in.

Lexi: Joe and I make an incredible team and we’ve had a lot of support that has been able to help us grow in the way that we work together. And that support system will never leave. We’ll still go to them with ideas and have them help us improve. And we’re so open with each other, we can work in a way where we understand each others weaknesses and strengths and we can strengthen our roles because we strengthen each other. Plus we’re genuine buds ☺.

LaLa Spotlight: Amanda Helmer

We recently had the pleasure of doing a giveaway with Amanda Catherine Designs and also had a chance to interview the inspirational lady who creates all of those phenomenal prints. Here’s our interview with her. Enjoy!

Name: Amanda Helmer

Hometown: Fishers, Indiana

What did you study in college?

I am currently studying art and architectural history at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

When did you begin Amanda Catherine Designs?

I opened my Etsy shop in October of 2011

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have enjoyed experimenting with digital art for a while. It was a way for me to relax with something creative after a long day of school. When told by some friends that they would be interested in purchasing my “experiments”, I realized I had a potential business! As a soon to be college grad, I understand the want and need for fashionable and reasonably priced home décor. After a couple months of research and creating posters, I opened Amanda Catherine Designs!

Where do you find inspiration for your prints?

I find inspiration in so many places. Everything from fashion, jewelry, and art is source for color inspiration. Like many creative types, I can go weeks without any ideas and then suddenly be hit with 100 in one day.

What article of clothing best describes your personality?

I love scarves and own way too many of them. They are laid back and offer a pop of color to any outfit without too much effort.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I am hoping to see my shop continue to grow and be able to take advantage of all the opportunities that come with it! I want to attend grad school for historic preservation and pursue a career in that. A life of love and a lot of adventure is what I hope for.

What is something that you love about yourself?

These past few months I have grown to love and appreciate my creativity and ability to make things happen. I am proud of myself for taking my small idea and making it a reality. One of the first posters I created said, “She decided to start living the life she always imagined”. I think of this quote a lot when I am feeling unmotivated. It pushes me to do at least one thing a day that gets me closer to my goals.

What advice to you have for young women looking to start their own businesses?

First, take the time to do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. You will be able to learn from people who have already been there and it might save you from a lot of mistakes! Second, know your demographic and how to pursue that demographic. I knew that I wanted to create a shop for fashionable young people who wanted to decorate well without breaking the bank. This made it much easier in deciding which people, stores, websites and blogs I should communicate with. Third and most importantly, trust your instincts. Advice from others can be extremely helpful, but at the end of the day, you know your idea better than anyone.

LaLa Spotlight: Hilary Hoover

Name: Hilary Hoover
Major: Communication Minor: Management, OLS
Hometown: Carmel, IN
Internship (tell us about that fabulous internship you had in Nashville): I lived in Nashville this past summer and was an Artists & Repertoire Intern at Big Machine Label Group. They represent Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry, Martina McBride, and various other country acts. I learned so much and had an incredible experience. I got to listen to demos, go to local concerts, and work local events such as meet and greets.
Involvement around campus: Chi Omega, Purdue Student Concert Committee, Dance Marathon
Favorite thing about Purdue: Purdue has been in my family for generations and in my blood since the day I was born. It feels like home and I take pride in being a Boilermaker!
Where do you see yourself in ten years: Life is pretty unpredictable but I see myself living in Nashville and loving my job in the music industry at a management company or record label. By then I hope to be married with a couple of kids as well!
What is something that you’re passionate about: I know this is probably predictable, but my main passion is music! I love finding it, listening to it and talking about it enough to want to make it my career.
Something that you love about yourself: I’d have to say my relaxed attitude and my ability to go along with just about anything! I’m proud of the fact that I’m spontaneous and always go with the flow.

LaLa Spotlight: Claire

To say that senior Boilermaker Claire Pickett has a lot going for her would be an understatement. A self-defined “closet nerd” from Carmel Indiana; Claire has a passion for giving back, living life to the fullest, and anything adventurous! She is a dedicated student, majoring in Public Relations and Rhetorical Advocacy and minoring in political science. Over the past 3 years here at Purdue she has maintained a cumulative 3.98 GPA and last summer she interned with an Australian National Rugby team in Sydney! We don’t know about you, but we may have to pocket this exquisite resume for our own personal benefit…

Outside the classroom she takes on multiple leadership roles, guiding many successful and well-known clubs and organizations on campus. Claire has led in executive director positions for the Old Masters program and Purdue University Dance Marathon, as well as served as the recruitment chair of her sorority, Delta Gamma.

If that isn’t impressive we don’t know what is! Claire’s strong sense of self and upbeat positive attitude makes her instantly likeable and fun to be around. We sat down with the beautiful and fabulous Claire and asked her a few questions about herself!

-You mentioned that you love adventure- tell us your favorite adventures you have experienced!

I would definitely say bungy-jumping in Australia this past summer. I was in a jungle at night so I had the most incredible view of the stars above me and the city lights in the distance. It was the most scared I’ve ever been, but actually getting myself to do it and overcoming that mental challenge gave me the greatest adrenaline rush and sense of exhilaration I’ve ever felt.

-What fuels your excitement for travel?

My family’s encouragement, support, and the example they have set for me definitely has enabled my passion for travel. But what fuels that passion is discovering something new and taking on the unknown. I think when you’re some place unfamiliar is when you learn the most about yourself and you unconsciously push yourself past your comfort zone.

-If you had one quote that you could live by what would it be and why?

I have to admit I have two and I don’t think I can choose between them!
My fourth grade teacher grounded the first into my head and I never forgot it still to this day. “We are what we repeatedly do, therefore excellence is not an act but a habit” – Aristotle
This quote always reminds me to never sell myself short and that a strong sense of character can help you overcome almost anything.
The second: “Nothing is worth more than this day” – Goethe
I love this because it always reminds me to try and take advantage of every day to make a difference in someone else’s life. I’ve come to see sometimes the smallest thing to you can make the biggest difference to someone else. Seize every opportunity that presents itself to you.

-Where do you see yourself after you graduate?

Such a hard one… Honestly, hopefully just happy. Unfortunately I think for our generation I would be setting myself up for disappointment if I stayed too closed minded or remained dead set on specific plans. I hope I can just find a career that challenges me and I love going to every day.

-You are incredibly thankful to your friends for your successes- elaborate!

They know me and what I’m capable of better than myself. I truly trust them and know they have nothing but my best interest at heart, which is one of the most priceless and valuable qualities to have in friends. I wouldn’t have pushed myself to do half of what I’ve accomplished at Purdue had I not had their encouragement and motivation. It also is the best medicine in the world to have people sit there and laugh with you when you mess up and can’t think about taking on another day.

-What is your favorite Purdue memory?

Living in my sorority, Delta Gamma, hands down. What’s better than living with all your best friends at once? Want to learn good communication skills? Surround yourself with 120 women 24 hours a day ☺

-What piece of advice do you have for the women of Purdue?

Don’t waste your precious time or energy on people that don’t matter. There are too many other extraordinary people out there who will lift you over all those that bring you down. Never sell yourself short on the people you surround yourself with.

E. Jean the Advice Queen

The only word to describe E. Jean Carroll’s advice section in Elle magazine is refreshing. When we first read her articles, her voice seemed to jump right off the page; her classically eloquent words were vivacious and full of color and life, in fact we couldn’t remember the last time a magazine article had left us this invigorated! We needed to know more about this advice goddess! So as LaLa is known to do, we did our research. And we found there was a lot to love about E. Jean…(besides the fact that she attended IU, but we will let that go).

She speaks kindly to her apprehensive writers, addressing them with old-fashioned terms of endearment and making sure they know how empathetic she is towards their situation. But she is in no way wishy washy about the truth of the matter. Within the first sentence she will give you exactly your answer, bluntly. Though her words are filled with love, her advice is witty, intelligent, and in many cases just plain crude. If you want advice- she’ll give it to you! We love how lovingly assertive she is, and we look up to her for it! Her perspective on life is guaranteed to leave you laughing and we promise you that you will have an entirely more positive frame of mind after reading her articles.

One of our favorite pieces of advice she ever gave was to a reader who was fed up with her friend’s vanity issues. E Jean’s advice- “The next time she starts in (talking about being beautiful), clap your hand to your forehead and whisper: “My God! I agree! You used to be a knockout!” “What do you mean ‘used to be’?” she’ll say, stunned. Which is when you smile and reply: “I don’t wish to hurt your feelings, and please forgive my bluntness, but I must tell you, my dear, you grow plainer and plainer by talking about how pretty you are.”

Check out her website at http://www.askejean.com/ to see her video answers. Or you can read her articles on elle.com http://www.elle.com/Life-Love/Ask-E.-Jean/(offset)/10.

Sometimes the most important thing when you find yourself distraught about a situation is to laugh and find the sunshine in it!
