Calling All Purdue Princesses

Almost every girl has dreamed of being a princess at one point in her life. Admit it, no matter how old you get, every time the Princess Diaries is on TV or someone mentions the royal wedding, visions of you sporting a tiara and a cotton candy-colored ball gown jump into your head. You know we’re right. Well get ready to jump up and down like a giddy little first grader because we have an amazing opportunity for you to become that princess you’ve always dreamed of being.

It may only be November, but Indiana is already gearing up for the greatest spectacle in racing, The Indy 500. Ah, we can already hear the revving engines and smell the gasoline, can’t you? Aside from the race itself, one of the greatest traditions of The Indy 500 is it’s 500 Festival Princess Program. The Princesses serve as ambassadors for the Indy 500 and throughout the spring leading up to the race they participate in outreach programs, they serve the local community, and they do so much more. Not only is becoming a 500 Princess quite an honor, it is a blast and an opportunity of a lifetime. And we’d like to add that we know a couple of past princesses and they’re kind of the bomb.com to say the least.

If you’d like to join the company of these amazing young women and finally fulfill your dreams of becoming a real life princess, come to the Program Call-out on Wednesday December 5th at 6 pm in EE 170. Also click here to join the Facebook event and invite all your other princess loving friends along as well.

So this year, consider trading in your jorts and cut-off tee for a tiara and a sash. Step aside Kate Middleton, there are some new princesses coming to town.

Faux Paw Part Two

We all know that West Lafayette isn’t exactly deemed as the music capital of the world, or of any place for that matter, but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of young and talented musicians in our tiny town. A few posts back we featured the local band, Faux Paw, and after attending their album launch concert, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this talented foursome because they’re going places. And they received extra kudos in our book after performing a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Rhiannon. Need we saw more?

Top Shop: Von’s

Have you ever wondered what it was like when our parents went to college? The picture in our head always involves a lot of bell bottoms, feathered hair, incense burning, and fraternity men in super short shorts and izod polos. We’ve always felt that we were born in the wrong decade and secretly wish to have attended college in the 70s, but when we take a step inside one of our favorite Purdue shops, Von’s, we’re instantly taken to another place and time. From gemstones, to beads, to colorful tapestries, to comic books, band tees, and beautifully bound books full of the classics, Von’s has anything and everything a college student could want, all with a carefree, stick it to the man, kind of vibe.

Because we love Von’s so much, we decided to feature some of their products on Purduelala, with the help of one of our favorite models. All the clothing and accessories featured are all from Von’s. Take a look!

Voter Registration Days. Why Will You Vote?

Purduelala loves America- and we know you do too! Thats why we know the coolest way to exercise our love for all things red, white and blue is by hitting the booths! We’re just a couple of months shy of the big 2012 presidential election and from the economy to healthcare, this election is proving to be one of the country’s most historical races! Want to get in on the action? Join the Purdue Student Government and get registered to vote! Lucky for us, PSG is making registering to vote as easy as ordering a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks by hosting two Voter Registration Days. Volunteers will be located outside of Stewart center from 11-3 on Tuesday, September 25 and Wednesday, September 26 helping students get registered to vote, as well as informing them how to do it on their own. Check out the inspirational video below to see why it’s important to voice your choice!

Faux Paw

Every now and then we stumble upon local talent that really steals our heart away. There’s nothing better than finding great music, especially when it’s right in our backyard here in West Lafayette. For those of you who have yet to hear about Faux Paw, listen in very closely; we sat down with lead guitarist, Gordon Wantuch, from the band to get the scoop on them as well as get some info about their upcoming show at Foam City, this Saturday, September 22nd at 9 pm. Dig in.

When was Faux Paw formed?
1776, minutes before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. (Last August, Just celebrated our first B-Day!!)

What are all the band member names/their instruments?
Garret Ney – Vocals, Guitar. Gordon Wantuch – Lead Guitar. Tom Lageveen – Drums. Steve Freeman – Bass.

Describe your sound and musical influences:
The sound a lawnmower makes when it runs over your dogs chew toy, Wilco, the sound lava makes when it reaches the salty coast of Iceland, Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac.

What was the recording process like for the band?
Kind of like stubbing your toe in the best possible way, frustrating yet captivating. It forces you to focus and change your style, kind of like when you move to a new school and everyone is into crazy bones but you still have a Tomagachi.

What can people expect for the show on Saturday?
A whole lot of fun. Dino DNA will really get things going and hopefully we can feed off their energy and put on a hell of a show too.

What does the future look like for Faux Paw?
We’ll be taking our act to the road this fall. Still really excited for the ever growing local scene, with things like Jurassic Pop growing and other talented local bands as well.

So there you have it friends. If you aren’t already convinced to come out to see the show on Saturday, we don’t know what else to say. Cute boys, great music and good times? Need we say more?

Speak Up Boilers

Do you ever feel like you have great ideas for Purdue University but just don’t know how to get your voice heard? Well do we have some news for you then. On Thursday, September 20th, Purdue Student Government will be holding an open forum style, Town Hall Meeting where students can come and voice their opinions about issues currently going on at Purdue. This meeting was the brain child of current Student Body President and Vice President, Joe and Lexi, and is an initiative they promised to students while campaigning. (Check out our LaLa interview with them here!) In order to get more information on the meeting, we met up with a Purdue Student Government member who has been working on this event, Kyle Pendergast, to hear what he had to say.

Purduelala: What is the idea behind the Town Hall Meeting?
Kyle: The idea is to bridge the gap between the student body and Purdue Student Government by creating an environment where discussion is open and students are free to express their opinions and concerns. We want to push the concept that if a student has an issue or idea, they know that they can present it at a monthly Town Hall.

Purduelala: What issues will be covered at the meeting?
Kyle: Issues covered include any important items that PSG needs student input on as well as anything else students can come up with.

Purduelala: Who can attend?
Kyle: Anyone can come! But each town hall will be tailored to the location of the event. If it is in a residence hall, the main questions will pertain to the residence halls and so on.

Purduelala: What will Joe and Lexi do with what they hear at the Town Hall Meeting?
Kyle: Joe and Lexi will use the information gained at these Town Halls to work with the rest of PSG on making the students ideas a reality. Their goal, along with the rest of PSG, is to continuously improve Purdue and foster a better environment for success.

The Town Hall Meeting will take place on Thursday September 20th, at 7 pm in the Union by Starbucks. Make sure to come and have your voice heard!

Meet the PSG Candidates Joe and Lexi

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down at our favorite spot on campus (you guessed it, Greyhouse) and chatting with two of Purdue’s best and brightest leaders, Joe Rust and Lexi Hiland. The duo are running for Purdue Student Government President and Vice President, and although the two seem as different as day and night, their partnership is one that will take them places. This fact was apparent from the way they completed each other’s sentences, to way they spoke so highly about each other, to the way they joked about all the funny anecdotes they’ll have to tell their grandchildren (mutual or not) about their campaigning experiences. But don’t take our word for it… read it and believe it.

Introduce yourselves:

Joe: I’m Joe Rust, a sophomore from Seymour, Indiana, studying agriculture. I’m the youngest of thirteen kids and I’m running for student body President.

Lexi: And I’m Lexi Hiland, a junior from Carmel, Indiana in film studies. I’m an only child and I’m running for student body Vice President alongside Joe.

What made you decide to run for student body President and Vice President?

Joe: It was on a bus ride coming back from Kansas City with a bunch of agriculture students at Purdue that another ag senator and I decided to walk around and talk to the other students on the bus about issues on campus. We spent three hours going seat to seat just talking one on one with them and I had so much fun. I remember getting off the bus and thinking about how much I enjoyed those three hours and then thinking that becoming Purdue Student Government President was the perfect way to continue that; talking to leaders on campus and getting their thoughts about issues at Purdue.

I then started looking for a running mate who would be a good fit, someone who wouldn’t think of the same ideas as me, but would compliment me and cover my weaknesses. I got a list of names from some friends and Lexi was on the list so we met up for lunch and I told her I’d talk to her about it more after winter break.

Lexi: So I’m unloading my stuff at Theta after winter break and Joe walks in with a sorority sister of mine, Erin Whittaker, and with his roommate. He walks right up to me, gets down on one knee, and says, “Lexi will you be my running mate.” He then pulls out a Purdue pin and says, “take this in honor of your love for Purdue”… and the rest is history. And somewhere in there I said, “I will” or “maybe” or “if I have to” [laughing]. I can’t remember.

What is your vision for the future of Purdue?

Joe: I want to see Purdue coming together. Different races, students from different countries, majors, and religions. There’s just a lot of diversity on campus and there are so many opportunities to work together to learn about other people and other cultures and we aren’t taking advantage of that. We could create such a strong network. We’re all going to go out one day to change the world in different ways and in different places. Creating that network here while we’re still students will keep us connected in the future as Boilermakers always.

Lexi: I really want to make it a goal that students are aware of what’s available to them through the university. We want to create videos for students, go out and talk to them, making sure that they know they can be involved with things using their unique interests. We want to make students know, especially the younger students, that they can use their unique skills on campus. We want them to know what resources are available to them, and not just with legal services or academics. We want to let them know they can be involved and make their experience at Purdue an even bigger tradition.

I’m a film major so initially I guess you wouldn’t think there was something I could have a leadership position in except pertaining to film. But seeing that I can use those skills within an organization, like Old Masters, to make the call out video and other things, and even getting an internship from that leadership position, it really shows that anyone can get involved and what great opportunities it can lead to.

Lexi, tell us something great about your running mate Joe.

What do I chose?! Joe has impressed me in so many ways. The top two I can think of are his genuine care for other students and finding out what they need to make their experience better at Purdue. He’s open to talking to anyone and he wants to know what they’re doing and wants to be a part of it. His confidence is so appealing.

Also, his knowledge about the university, all the ins and outs of Purdue, is so apparent and incredible. He knows faculty members, knows the system, and cares about how it works. He wants to be a part of something that is incredibly special to him and others, and the way he communicates that with university members he knows is honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. It’s very professional yet at the same time personal.

Joe, it’s your turn. Tell us something great about Lexi.

Since day one Lexi has surprised me. She has not stopped impressing me. She keeps me in check and makes sure we’re going in the right direction for the right reasons. I’ve been in awe of how she catches me on my slips. I’m really lucky to have someone like her who can do that. She’s so creative. She has a passion for the things she loves, you can see how important film, music, and photography are to her. She sees things that I don’t. I love that. She brings a fresh perspective and that’s something that will be great in Purdue Student Government and the more and more time we spend together I am so confident she would make a great Vice President.

Why should people vote for you?

Joe: Campaigning is like a giant brainstorming session. It’s all about the leaders of Purdue thinking of the best ways to improve the school. So the ideas are out there. But it’s not about who can come up with the best ideas, it’s who can make them happen. We can make those ideas a reality. Not only can we implement those ideas, the whole idea of our campaign is ONE Purdue. It’s about removing the barrier between Purdue Student Government and the students, and making sure the flow of ideas are constantly coming in.

Lexi: Joe and I make an incredible team and we’ve had a lot of support that has been able to help us grow in the way that we work together. And that support system will never leave. We’ll still go to them with ideas and have them help us improve. And we’re so open with each other, we can work in a way where we understand each others weaknesses and strengths and we can strengthen our roles because we strengthen each other. Plus we’re genuine buds ☺.

For more information on Joe and Lexi, check out their website, onepurdue.org and don’t forget to vote at get involved on April 2nd-4th.
